Virginia: State and National Science Standards :: Essays Papers

Virginia State and subject field Science StandardsAcross the field of education, standards realize become both a guideline for teacher lesson plans and a measuring device for students achievement. In recent years several subject-based standards have been put in place by national organizations of scientists, mathematicians, and other professionals. Simultaneously, states have been developing their own set of standards, many of which may or may not correspond with offerings such as the National Science Education Standards (NSES). One example we will focus on in this paper is the State of Virginias Standards of Learning (SOLs). As a result, the VA SOLs received a rather poor direct on a national scale, measured by the Thomas B. Ford Foundation in March 1998. Much of the criticism lies in the VA SOLs lack of broad ideas and theoretical structure.Educators across the state have differing opinions concerning the VA Science Standards. Many educators have expressed inconsistency over th e value and the implementation of the SOLs. With regard to the VA Science SOLs, one elementary school teacher stated, I dont find the acquaintance SOLs moot at all. I really enjoy teaching science and can find many ways to include the SOLs in all my academic areas. not all teachers feel so positively about the standards. A Northern Virginia elementary principal expressed this viewpoint when he said, Your feeling about the science SOLs will depend on your philosophical point of view about a fact vs. experiential science syllabusTeachers who like open-ended, experiential-thinking based curriculum will not like them VA SOLs, teachers who like sequential, fact-rich curriculum will.One criticism of the VA SOLs points towards its lack of exploratory learning due to its fact-based nature. Many believe that the extensive gist needed to be covered handicaps teachers in such a way that they are unable to teach anything else but the SOLs and therefore can not drudge deeply into any one ar ea of study. On the contrary, VA SOLs can be a valuable resource for lesson plans. Since all teachers on a certain grade level must hold their students responsible for the same information, they can easily share lessons and materials. This lends itself to collaborative teaching.The NSES also have both positive and negative aspects. The National Science Education Standards appeal to those who appreciate an inquiry-based, constructivist approach. As stated in Catherine Kellys article, Reaching to the Standards (2000), The Standards NSES have also encouraged constructivism and rallied support for a developmental curriculum in which students are more process oriented than product oriented.

Reflection has its importance in clinical practice we always seek to be successful and that can be achieved by learning either day of our life through experiences we encounter. In that way we can reconsider and rethink our previous knowledge and add new learning to our knowledge standstill so as to inform our practice. Learning new skills does not stop upon graduation it must become second nature to all professionals as they stretch out their professional development throughout their careers (Jasper, 2006). Through the story, Pip learns that money is not the most important thing in the world, when he accepts the convict as his benefactor and friend. some other theme central to the novel is that of justice. Justice is always done. Joe behaves admirably throughout the novel, and Pip does not. In the end Joe is rewarded by winning Biddy. Estella mocks Pip for being common and breaks his heart. However, she marries Drummle who treats her badly, and in the end it is she, with a convict as a father, who is of the lowest class.Compeyson and Magwitch are both criminals, but Compeyson is by far the worse of the two. They both die, as penance for their crimes, but Compeysons death is horrific and painful, whereas Magwitchs is a more dignified affair. Another theme is that pride and revenge are destructive. Miss Havisham sets out to destroy the male sex, but in the end only ruins the lives of two females, her and Estella. The historical stage setting is another reason why Great Expectations is a great novel. Britain had just undergone an industrial revolution, which had widened the gap between the rich and urban dwelling poor.A homogeneous situation in France had led to a political revolution. The British authorities were mindful of this and thus imposed a harsh regime executions and transportations were commonplace. The novel also entertains and informs at the same time. Although, for analytical purposes, I have divided these things up, the reader responds to them as a whole and they all work together to make an impact. However, literature, by definition is an art. So although great Expectations is technically a good novel, due to the subjective nature of the literature, it is up the individual whether they enjoy it or not, and whether they prefer it to any of Dickenss other novels.

Many qualities have to come together in one person to make his or her writing great, so having the idea for a story alone is not enough great writers also have to cause talent and originality as well as the dedication required to see a story with to the end.Anyone can tell a story, but it takes additional talent to tell a story beautifully and engagingly. As a reader, my favorite stories are always the ones that draw me in with descriptive language, imagery, and metaphors used skilfully by the authors. One example is F. Each culture has some form of importance in the shape of the circle. He dialog about the way Native Americans built their villages in the shape of a circle, the way Aztecs made a circular calendar, and the way that each culture put down itself in the center of that circle. He talks about ancient cultures believing that everything generates around a specific point, orbiting around it. Campbell also speaks of clipping going in a circle. In ancient times, it was seen as a reoccurring aspect of life, summer, fall, winter, spring. All things ended and began anew in a pattern. Now, though, time is seen as a square line. Clocks make us realize that time is flowing past and will never come again. Before, death was loo ked at as a reincarnation now it is simply looked at as the end.Peak experiences, as Campbell explains, are moments where you can feel the harmony of being alive. For him, it was a race in Colombia. He said he could feel that he was going to win the race, not even because he was winning, but because he could feel it within himself. He explains peak experiences as being in a state of mind that allows you to see your outer most limits and obtain your maximum potential. He goes on to say that not all peak experiences are physical. Some can simply be a thought or realization that changes your outlook on life or solving a problem. Some peak experiences are not the highest points of your life. A life can have many peak experiences as long as you feel that you are at one with yourself and what you are accomplishing.Personally, I understand the inner Christ, not as a connection to the life around us, but a working understanding of the path God has set out for us. I can understand the ideas behind this belief in the inner Christ and the idea that Jesus may have found his inner connection with life, but I do not agree with it. I believe that The imprint they are referring to is the feeling that comes with following Gods path, whether you know him as your savior or not. The idea of the circle on the other hand, I can understand completely. cartridge holder feels like it is flowing by without slowing, but there is always the chance of next time. Next time Ill get that raise next time Ill win next time I will do better. Time isnt a perfect circle to me, but neither is it a straight line. It is a looping flow, cork screwing back onto itself. My peak realization in life so far was the creation of an art penning in high school. I was working on a drawing of a tree, creating every painstaking detail, and all the time, I knew that I was going to be proud of it that I was going to get it right. I felt accomplished without having yet accomplishing anything. To this day, I can look at no other spot I have finished and count it as my best.
